Before getting an MRI scan, here are some key things patients should know:

1. What is an MRI?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnets, radio waves, and a computer to produce detailed images of the inside of your body. It is non-invasive and does not use radiation.

2. METAL PRECAUTIONS!

The MRI uses a strong magnetic field, so you must inform the technician if you have any of the following:

  • Metal implants (e.g., pacemakers, cochlear implants, joint replacements).

  • Metal fragments or shrapnel.

  • Tattoos with metallic ink or permanent makeup.

  • Dental work, braces, or retainers (usually safe, but it's good to mention).

  • Medication patches with metallic backing.

3. Clothing and Jewelry

You will be asked to remove all metal objects, such as jewelry, watches, belts, and clothing with zippers or metallic components. You may be provided with a hospital gown for the procedure.

4. Claustrophobia or Anxiety

If you are prone to claustrophobia or anxiety, let your healthcare provider or MRI technician know. Our Facility offers an OPEN MRI machine that is very spacious and helps you relax and feel comfortable during the procedure. Being able to provide this specific service was one of the reasons we at Sunflower Imaging were inspired to open an imaging center here in Wichita KS.

5. Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or think you might be, inform your healthcare provider. MRIs are generally safe during pregnancy, but your doctor will determine if it’s necessary.

6. Preparing for the Scan
  • Most MRI scans do not require fasting, but if you are having a scan with contrast, you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the procedure.

  • Follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

7. The Contrast Agent

Some MRI scans require a contrast agent, which is injected into your vein to enhance the images. Let your provider know if you’ve had a previous allergic reaction to contrast dye or have kidney issues.

8. What to Expect During the Scan
  • The MRI machine will make some noise during the scan. You’ll be given earplugs or headphones to protect your hearing. You will also be given the option to play any type of music you choose.

  • You’ll need to lie still to ensure clear images. The table will move into the machine, and you’ll be in constant communication with the technician via a microphone.

  • The procedure is painless.

9. After the Scan
  • If you had contrast dye, drink plenty of fluids to help your body clear it.

Understanding these points can help you feel more comfortable and prepared for your MRI scan. Always ask your healthcare provider if you have additional questions or concerns.
